Two portraits of Rulan Chao Pian

Born into a family of Chinese scholars and musicians, Rulan Chao Pian studied both in China and in the United States. She received her B.A. and M.A. in Western music history from Radcliffe College in the 1940s, and a Ph.D. from Harvard in 1960 in East Asian Languages and Music. She taught both Chinese language and music at Harvard, and in 1974 she was named tenured Professor, one of the first women to attain this rank and the very first Chinese American woman professor at the university. Rulan Chao Pian is "fondly remembered by all who knew her for having offered both scholarly guidance as well as exceptional hospitality" (FAS Memorial Minute), as demonstrated by this celebratory poem written for her 80th birthday.

Forever young as an orchid at Ten-Eight (18)— For Rulan at her Eight-Ten (80th) birthday"

Loh Wai Fong, 4.19.2002. English translation by Bell Yung.

Your home is a Great Home—everyone’s home
On the walls are calligraphy and painting
On the tables are tea and snacks
On the sofas are guests so fond of conversing
That they often ignore the flowers and moonlight in the yard
Your home is everyone’s Great Home and a Home of Experts
What occurs in this Great Home
Is a bit like fairy tales
That’s why it is Everyone’s Home
With a heart so wide and deep
It can accommodate many arguing voices
This one’s words strike to the left and the right
That one’s discourses fly up and down
Laughing and cussing in great abandon
No time for tea and congee
Then Ted’s eloquent and commanding silence asserts itself
And you butt in with a wise word here and there
We are all like rudderless boats
Floating in the capacious warmth of your smile
Permit me in the midst of your forever-young smile
To toast your old-style kindness and gentleness now so rare
We thank you for a friendship that has always retained its vigor
We wish you forever young as an Orchid at Ten-Eight

This exhibit, curated by Lingwei Qiu (裘陵維), Peter Laurence and Patricia O'Brien, is available in both English and Chinese. It features material she collected throughout her life and donated to the Loeb Music Library after her retirement in 1992, including rare books and recordings, original ethnographic field recordings, and other material from her life, research and teaching.

Design Note

Among family and friends Rulan Chao Pian was known as "Iris," a name inspired by her parents' appreciation for the iris blossoms in the Botanical Garden near the Harvard campus. The color palette of this exhibit reflects both her name and the purple and yellow iris theme that was used in the original physical exhibit, mounted at the Eda Kuhn Loeb Music Library in 2022.
